I’ll stop yelling when the stores stop selling! 🙂
It’s time for some products to stop being the in-stock go-to option sold in stores!* Today I’m going to vent a little – please don’t take it personally if you have these things – but sometimes I pass by one of these items and I just want to march up to the front of the store with it in my hands, raise the item for all to see, and yell STOP SELLING THIS! Since they would think I’m a crazy person and probably politely escort me out of the building I guess I can’t do that. So I will appease this need by yelling it here. STORES, STOP SELLING THIS STUFF!!! (I’m feeling better already)…. First up:
Plastic Kitchen Trash Cans
Look, trash is ugly. That doesn’t mean people need to stick something ugly right out in the middle of the kitchen. Not when there are trash cans that are actually attractive! And some don’t even look like trash cans.
Can you spot my trash can in this old photo of my kitchen?
Here are some nice options I found with a simple search. Why aren’t these available in every store??
I think most people know mini blinds aren’t great. Stores still carry them in stock, though. Honestly, I don’t even like those 2” wood (or faux-wood) blinds. Why? Either way it is blocking the window with horizontal stripes ALL THE TIME. Because let’s be real – no one pulls the entire blind up; they leave it down all the time and just rotate the blinds open and shut. People with blinds get used to living with a massively compromised view and compromised light in their homes. When I come in and pull the blinds completely up clients marvel at how lovely their view suddenly looks without those horizontal ‘jail bar’ slats impeding their view.
In my own home I’ve tried a lot of combinations. In the master bedroom I’ve got light filtering cellular shades with light blocking side panels. In bedroom 2 a simple affordable roller shade is paired with a skinny valance to hide the roller mechanism. In bedroom 3 I used a double roman with a sheer layer behind and blackout layer in front – with side panels for a little color. In our kitchen I have a simple roman shade that stacks up out of the way:
Roman shades, roller shades, cellular shades, solar shades – if a window shade is what you want there are fantastic options out there! The range of fabrics has increased, the technology available on these shades for automated up/down is here to stay, and cordless options are a safe bet if you want to stay economical with price.
Pocket Top and Tab Top Curtain Panels
Why do stores still sell these? Both are such dated ways to hang curtains!
Instead look for back tab or grommet tops, or if you fall in love with a curtain that only has a pocket top add clips instead of using the pocket to update the look! I’ve also seen lots of clever tutorials like this one for changing a tab top to a back tab.
As a little bonus, here are my favorite sources for curtain panels if you want to go shopping to replace those old ones (it’s a whole different post, but I will say height matters! I like shopping places that can offer me 96” length options):
A year ago I needed cabinets for our flip project. When I looked for in-stock cabinets in a white shaker style I couldn’t find any, which completely shocked me. It’s definitely the most popular profile of this decade – why couldn’t I find it ready made??
The good news: I just checked, and it looks like Lowes got with the program and now has white shaker style cabinets in stock!
Of course, all the home improvement stores still have dated oak in-stock cabinets too. Unless someone is adding to an existing kitchen and HAS to get a new – already dated – cabinet to match, I don’t see why anyone would want that! Come on stores, painted cabinets or stained cabinets in other wood types should be the in-stock options!
Ugly Flush Mount Lights
WHY are stores still selling these??? Just…NO!!!!
There are lots of super cheap utility flush mount lights out there if cost is the reason people are grabbing these. But really, please consider upgraded flush lights for your hallways, closets, etc. Here are a few from Pottery Barn, though you can find beautiful flush mounts almost anywhere now. I recently made the switch myself!
I’m curious to know what you would add to this list.
What do YOU think stores should just stop selling?
*Disclaimer – for all of these items I see the REASON for selling them – cost, mainly. And maybe there are places where such cheap things are the right thing to buy (like for the garage or unfinished basement, for example). But people buy them and put them front and center in their homes. So anytime I see them in the stores I find myself wishing stores would just stop selling!!
